One of the four major moons surrounding Romantas, this small ball of ice would be unremarkable except for the Federation research base tucked below the surface of the ice. Due to the gravitational effects of Romantas, there is liquid water below the surface of the ice. The initial scientific mission on Aquos was to study the development of unicellular and even occasional multicellular life in this environment. As such, Federation engineers designed and build a base deep under the ice, surrounded by the water. The station has grown as the scope of research has grown as well. The population of the base has increased to over 1,000, including approximately 375 researchers, their families, support staff and spaceport workers. Supplies are brought in fairly regularly from Oraia and the population here are considered to be in Oraian territory.
The growth of the base, as well as its generally insular nature, have resulted in conspiracy theories and wild speculation on the Extranet regarding what exactly what kinds of research are happening on Aquos. The remoteness of the base would make it a good facility for work involving volatile materials, but the conspiracy theories suggest much darker and/or fantastic goings on. One point to refute this notion comes from the lack of presence of official security staff; less than 10 soldiers from the base on Oraia are stationed at any given time, and on fairly regular shifts since the sheer boredom tends to wear out most soldiers.
